ACT FIRST: MENTAL HEALTH FIRST RESPONDER TRAINING

  1. IN SCHOOLS

“More than half of primary school teachers say they do not feel adequately trained in supporting pupils with mental health problems, research suggests”. Sept 2017  https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/sep/21/primary-school-teachers-not-trained-to-deal-with-mental-health-issues

Many teachers who responded to the YouGov survey said they were  ill-equipped to meet the needs of the children in their care.

Mental health first responder training is a 6 hour course delivered in one day or two half days that is  SUITABLE FOR TEACHERS, SCHOOL NURSES/COUNSELLORS and SCHOOL OFFICE STAFF.

In this course participants will learn:

  • about an evidence based framework for conceptualising mental health difficulties in children and young people
  • how to spot children and young people who are struggling
  • how to best help in  “crisis” situations
  • how to best help in ongoing situations
  • where to refer children and young people for further help.

Up to eight participants will learn together through experiential practice and didactic teaching. Ongoing supervision and follow up can also be provided.

2. IN THE SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY

“Superyacht crew are struggling with stress and mental health issues, according to Yachting Pages Media Group, which commissioned a survey of superyacht crew and industry experts last summer (2017).

Out of the crew surveyed, 72% had suffered from mental health problems or knew somebody else in the industry that had.  Out of this proportion, only 54% had talked about their issues, with 70% confirming that no support was put in place to help them cope when struggling with stress and general mental health on board.

An overwhelming 75% of crew said that the industry is not doing enough to tackle mental health problems and look after the overall wellbeing of crew”.

ACT FIRST is a mental health first responder course for skippers and crew, designed to provide the skills to:

  • assist individuals to look after their own mental health
  • identify crew who are struggling and prevent minor mental health issues becoming major ones
  • help in  “crisis” situations
  • help in ongoing situations
  • know when and where to refer crew for further help and support.
